Starman (1984) Jeff Bridges to Karen Allen: I watched you very carefully. Red light stop, green light go, yellow light go very fast.

Red light cameras are the bane of society. Studies have shown no reductions in accidents at intersections where cameras have been installed. In fact, the reverse is true: rearend accidents have increased due to vehicles slamming on their brakes at the beginning of the yellow phase causing the car behind (following too close) to hit the braking vehicle in front. Automobile safety organizations have concluded increasing the delay between red to green phases (in effect having a instance of red phase in all four directions) would dramatically cut the number of accidents at intersections thereby eliminating the need for RLCs. Additionally, statistics have shown the cameras aren’t adding to municipality’s coffers; they actually cost more to operate than revenues generated, yet law enforcement agencies insist on retaining their usage. Nevermind the EXORBITANT FINES levied against the accused driver!! Cheaper to get around by horse & buggy!

Can anyone detect I’m soured on red light cameras??!!

(Don’t get me started on right turn violations at red light camera-equipped intersections!)

Yep, following too closely causes way more accidents than red/yellow light behavior. I want a camera that measures distance between cars following and tickets the tailgaters!

A lot of accidents could be prevented simply by timing traffic lights correctly. But then the police couldn’t devote half their resources (i.e. our money) to nice, safe traffic enforcement, and the police unions would never allow that!

what does it matter, most of the folks I see driving thru red light have no plate or those temporary ones. And the fines on these are just over the top. sticking it to the little man,

Go download and use the Smartphone/iPhone ap “Trapster” and you’ll have plenty of notification about where the red-light cameras are located AND where there are active speed traps. It’s a free application and it can save you lots of money very quickly.

Actually, the cameras don’t flash for a full sec after the light turns red. If you ran a yellow, you would be long gone by the time the picture was snapped. It only catches flagrant violations.
