In at least the original stories, Rubik created the eponymous cube as a visual aid in his architecture classes.

…a slow… drip…drip…drip…gargle..g o rk. … * cough * * cough * .. I would rather sleep through all 3 of my alarm clocks (set to go off at different times) and wake the entire apartment building (which I have done at least once – I was tired) – than try Adam’s invention.
