Katy: Whatcha doin'?
Adam: Watering the lawn.
Katy: Don't we have a sprinkler?
Adam: We do. But I like doing it this way. It's relaxing.
Katy: What is? Watering or wasting time?
Adam: Both, if you do it right.
Watering by hand is not a very good idea. Exclusive of evaporative losses, and some folk’s personal opinions, the most efficient way to water a lawn, or garden for that matter, is to water deep but infrequently. Shallow watering only causes shallow roots, which then need more frequent watering.
