Had to look that 1 up. Petard is a small explosive device used to break down walls and gates

I’m safe from hoisting, I misplaced my petard years ago. It might have gone in a yard sale.

Most of us don’t know what that means, but that doesn’t stop us from doing it.

I don’t have to worry about it, my petard passed away in 1988!

Once upon a time someone leaned a frame with a bomb against a door. It didn’t go off and they hung him with it.

A Petard is a hand bomb or grenade, like the sphere in the cartoons w/a fuse. it is also slang for “little fart”. Hoist by your own petard is being blown up by your own grenade or less violently to be awash in your own bio gas.
