Tired? Tired from doing what??

That lazy bum hasn’t done a day’s work in his life!!

I’m waiting till one of those skinny boats run him down.

(Watched several YouTube’s on traveling throughout the U.K. on skinny canal boats. It looked like a very relaxed and scenic way to see the country.)

Canal Street reminds me of one of my favourite comic artists Leo Baxendale. He started out drawing Little Plum, Minnie the Minx, the Bash Street Kids and The Three Bears for The Beano. He then went on to draw strips for The Beezer which included The Banana Bunch who were “a middle-class version of the Bash Street Kids”. Their school was in Banana Crescent. Baxendale went from D. C. Thompson to Odhams in 1964 and drew some new strips including The Tiddlers who were based in Canal Street School. This was in a comic called Wham. There was another strip in Wham that was drawn by Baxendale and was called Biff – a character called Biff in a comic called Wham!

Another strip by Baxendale for Wham was “Footsie the Clown” which would later be revived in Whizzer and Chips in the 1970s. Yet another strip by Baxendale was “Eagle Eye – Junior Spy” which had a recurring villain called Grimly Feendish who went on to appear in his own strip in a companion comic called Smash. Grimly Feendish was revived in Shiver and Shake in the 1970s. Whizzer and Chips (1969-90) and Shiver and Shake (1973-4) were both two-in-one comics. Chips was the comic in the centre of Whizzer and Shake was the comic inside Shiver but Shiver and Shake proved far less successful.

Another successful Wham character was Frankie Stein who was originally drawn by Ken Reid and later revived for Shiver and Shake by Robert Nixon who continued the strip in Whoopee!! from 1974 to 1984 before going back to D. C. Thompson. The Frankie Stein strip continued until the last issue of Whoopee!! in 1985. Frankie also appeared in the 1975-6 comic Monster Fun and in Buster Comic from 1976 to 1986.

Shiver and Shake and Monster Fun also contained two of the best strips from Baxendale’s later career. Baxendale drew Sweeney Toddler in Shiver and Shake and the strip continued in Whoopee!! then Whizzer and Chips and then Buster. It was even more successful than the revived Frankie Stein strip.

With “lie” being the operative word.

It IS a wonder he is floating…considering the current state of dried up rivers in the UK this season!

Well it’s hot, he’s just trying to cool off.

Andy really needs to find another route home from the pub that doesn’t include Canal St. Otherwise one of these cold nights his canal dip is going to lead to hypothermia.

Only Andy could think of the canal as a waterbed!

Do it too many times and they will call you a floater.

More like taking a refreshing swim in the canal after drinking all evening!

Breaking Cat News now has an entire purple room. Of course, the writer told us that before the colorist got to it.

I’ve heard of waterbeds, but this is ridiculous!

Lie down in the water, that’s a perfect safety tip by British lifeboat associations.

If you get tried in water, panic will get you drowned so better lie down on the surface and wait for help or wait until tiredness ends.

Oh, the power of suggestion!
