Tribune Media is ending Little Orphan Annie’s newspaper run after 85 years.
From Phil Rosenthal’s business column in the Chicago Tribune:
In the changing media landscape, however, Little Orphan Annie has run into adversity not even she could overcome. The sun will come out tomorrow, but the tomorrow after June 13 will be the first in generations to dawn without “Annie” appearing in a daily newspaper.
The final Sunday panel of the strip, once seen in hundreds of papers but now run by fewer than 20, will end with Daddy Warbucks uncertain over what happened to Annie in her latest run-in with the Butcher of the Balkans. And, leaping lizards, what about her dog, Sandy? Arf.
The cliffhanger is actually a show of faith that there’s still life in the old gal. At least that’s the view of Tribune Media Services, a division of Chicago Tribune parent Tribune Co., which launched the strip during the Calvin Coolidge administration and profited mightily as it parlayed pop-icon status into an oft-performed hit musical, a hugely popular 1930s and ’40s radio series, movies and merchandise.
“Annie is definitely not dying,” said Steve Tippie, TMS’ vice president of licensing. She “will definitely have a life beyond this newspaper incarnation. …The daily newspaper strip will go away. Now, that doesn’t mean that Annie won’t come back … whether it’s (in) comic books, graphic novels, in print, electronic. It’s just too rich a vein (not) to mine.”
We .will just have to find another meeting place if they do not run re-runs of Annie. I still believe I would enjoy some from WWII, Korea, when “Daddy” was making war machines and handling spies, etd.
Had a busy day and couldn’t keep the eyes open last night.
It would sure be nice if the powers that be read all our comments about loosing Annie, and rethink their cancellation……….or just really put some work into continuing the story on line!!!
Going to miss this Annie and Daddy and Asp and Punjab and Sandy and Santiago
Warbucks rocks he’s what rich people are supposed to be
He does what is best for his country free enterprise and trade are the ONLY thing that has ever led to long lasting peace
Yes sometimes he skirts the letter of the law to see that its spirit it fulfilled and he is an idealized capitalist a philanthropist and even fights corrupt businessmen as often as he does normal criminals, terrorists, spies, and saboteurs
Sure he probably should go to the proper authorities but that would be boring and is part of the willing suspension of disbelief of fiction and it’s not like he doesn’t have the skills to get the job done and as a private citizen can do the things the government can’t
He is also a self-made man, the name Warbucks as he started as a factory worker in a mutions plant while going to college at night, before working up to foreman where after making the company considerable money gave the employees raises and reinvested in the company instead of just keeping it for himself, yes he a defense contractor so what, greed and patriotism/altruism aren’t mutually exclusive and can actually help each other.
The ability to think of future generation when calculating pragmatic utilitarianism is what separates us from the animals. The world is not the way it is because of thugs and psychopaths, corrupt businessmen/politicians (which contrary to fiction are the exception not the rule) but because most people are too stupid to know what is best for them the extreme left and extreme right get caught up in their ideals and refuse to acknowledge brutal facts of reality no real world understanding of the extreme complexities of politics, economics, technological logistics, and how they’re all interconnected in the long run. People want everything right here right now the whole world just handed to them on a silver platter think just by complaining something will happen without a tangible plan. Such a plan will require a lot of long, hard, boring work all day every day for generations.
I just learned about Annie’s impending cancellation yesterday. Since then I’ve read all your comments concerning this event. I wouldn’t hold out any hopes of Annie continuing beyond the newspaper strips, at least as far as new material goes. Same thing happened when Rugrats was dropped by Nickelodeon and since then it’s been reprints. Think they’re on their fifth or sixthgo-around and they never have gone back to the very first year. What we may be seeing is Annie in some sort of rerun form. Have heard one idea thrown out featuring the Leonard Starr stuff that covered 20 years and was absolutely incredible. Or you could have Harold Gray, depending on where they choose to start. My main concern is what happens to the IDW series. Is that out the window as well? Have been waiting for Volume 5 with no luck. Rumor has it that Gray’s estate has pulled the plug on a lot of this and wants to take our girl in a new direction for a new audience. Anyone know anything about this? I was happy to see a complete reprinting of the Gray material and now I’m upset as hell. What happens next?
I wish that when I pay my Genius dues some of it went to the artists rather than simply to the goComics crew. There needs to be some way to support quality comic strips. Especially the ones with a history, like Annie, Tracy, Gasoline Alley and Blondie. The days of newspapers supporting the comics is long past. We need an alternative so that we don’t lose anymore comics this way.
It is with a deep sadness I see the last of Annie and her world. I hope that it is only a temporary parting.

When Annie continues (in whatever venue they decide) I wonder if Maeder & Slampyak will still be onboard??
They have done an outstanding job IMO

Wait… So when we’re not in Dick Tracy land, Sundays don’t mean endless recaps of action we’ve already seen? We just… get on with it!?

What a pity. The best written TMS strip closing down.. But hope this frees up Jay Maeder to write Dick Tracy (?)

Got thinking maybe there could be some epilogue I kind of would like to see Annie a little older perhaps a love interest or something.
Maybe someone out there would be willing to write some fanfiction of our heroes?
