The smell of freshly mown grass perfuming the air, my husband watching the Tigers on TV while listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio, me curled up on the recliner with a napping baby… could Heaven be any better? (My baby turns 22 tomorrow… heave sigh.)
Baseball’s easy to understand. You turn off the clock. Time is measured in outs. You watch the play of the game and the interplay of personalities. It’s a wonderful way to unwind.
Used to be a fan of the sport but with the lockouts, strikes and the people paying for the stadiums, I’ve lost interest..I enjoy watching my son (14) play in the local city league.
I never much cared for b-ball on TV, but in the statium, doing the wave, hoping for a foul ball (even up in th nosebleed section), trying to figure out who was who out on the field when they were the size of bugs, hoping for home runs so the fireworks would go off, that was ALWAYS enjoyable.
@night-gauntactully, my husband pretty much hates to watch any and all sports, he’s not into passive watching. I’m the one who gets into baseball and football, but i wouldn’t call my watching passive ;)
That was a little before I paid attention, but I know of Van Patrick, and of course I remember George Kell. They were a great part of Detroit . To the Corner! Slainte!

She understands ‘striking out’ which you may find out at bedtime, Arlo, if you don’t watch your attitude.

My wife used to say hearing Ernie Harwell’s voice on the radio was the first true sign of spring.

Baseball would be a lot more fun to watch if the batter got to keep the bat while he’s running around the bases.

Ah, Ernie Harwell and George Kell… those were indeed the days. I miss them, and Tiger Stadium too. Can’t believe they tore it down.
