To tell you the truth, this the first time I’ve actually thought that phrase through…..And I taught American history for many years……Yeah, what are our OTHER unalienable rights? Besides sleeping in on Saturday……The pursuit of happiness should cover most of my needs though……

The founders knew that if those three were protected, then the rest would be also, whatever they may be. Our problem is that in trying to add to the list we are destroying the first three.

I think some of you are confusing the Declaration of Independence (an important historical document) with the Constitution (real law).

Arlo doesn’t need to explain what a ‘right’ is. He is putting the question to us: do we care about the phrase “among these” enough to ask what it means? To discuss it, it is necessary to distinguish “rights” from “wants” from “need” from “desires” – beginning with consideration of how we consider “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” to be rights to begin with and what each implies. Arlo has tossed the ball into the reader’s court. Of course, there’s always tomorrow’s strip – this may be an entire week in light of Independence Day.

Constitution is basis for government structure in the United States. Declaration of Independence originally was the statement for why we wanted to be an free and independent nation, but to me has always been the ideal we should be striving to achieve as a free nation.which brings me to the words that immediately follow Arlo’s quote of the day:
That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —Since just about everyone is mad at some aspect of the government right now, we sure have come a long way….

@Ken M: “The Founders intended for our system of government to pass and enforce laws that protect us from each other, not from ourselves.” Actually, the Founders intended the Constitution and the laws derived therefrom to protect us from the government.

The equivalent section of the Constitution is the 10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” The Supreme Court has held in the past that the 10th Amendment protects the right to privacy, among others.-Cougar :{)

OK everyone…Rights are something that a person has that doesn’t cost me anything.Entitlements are different… they require money out of my pocket and are therefore NOT rights.
