A liberated man is one who is willing to pay back in … um … physical favors … in return for being taken to dinner. With no offense to that man’s ego, of course.

In the 1960s and 1970s “liberation” was the watchword. Somehow it was not recognized that everybody’s life in any society – even a recluse’s life – is partly owned by the people around them. “Liberation” just changes the details of our interdependencies. I daresay most adults have to work most of their lives one way or another to earn their keep.

A lot of things wrong here. If I were Arlo, this conversation would have been over when she said “This wasn’t part of the deal.” And second – she’s just as broke as before – that $40 belongs to her dad.
