I walked my dog 2,384 miles last year, this year we are just shy of 1,100 miles. At least according to mapmyrun.com. But man, for the last week with the temps in the upper 90s and low 100’s thanks to the climate change SUV and Truck owners have amplified, the total mileage has been 0.
Normally, when it’s hot during the day I’ll open the house up in the morning (like 4:30 a.m.), but it’s too hot out to bother. Three more days of this, then “normal” August weather for a week, then hot again. I don’t think we will get much out of the garden this year.
Walking doesn’t burn that many calories. If Janis were looking to lose weight, she needs to do actives that gets her heart rate up, such as jogging or aerobics.
Walking is fun, we do it at the zoo which is about 2 miles from us. They have a program where folks can come in prior to opening while they are setting up and feeding so you can walk the trails, not breath fumes and mostly shaded. Also it is a perfect 3 miles. Perfect for the wife and I. Added bonus, they have water and bathrooms.
I walk outside every day (in FL) but I know which paths have shade and walk there. In the winter it is not hot and humid so I walk on sidewalks in full sun.
To a degree, a person can get used to some heat. I went from the East, to being stationed in Louisiana… kind of a huge temperature difference, but, I persisted, and managed to run every other day, on my days off. Of course, I also spent the rest of the day in the apartment complex pool, but, that made the run worth it. I have to say, though, I was totally rung out, when I got home.

Arlo, no change in diet, no change in weight, will die soon, because Janis is going to flip out on him.

Arlo, your timing to ask is awful.

In panel three she looks like something from a zombie movie.

Don’t tell her she looks hot. You would lose points.

If you exercise you’re going to build muscle mass and weight, but at least the weight will be moved to more attractive places.

I hear that Richard Simmons has a new sound track that would be perfect for Janis.

Welcome to the age when it seems like one’s metabolism is actually going in reverse.

Janis, if it is that hot, you need to slow down, and carry some water. Heat exhaustion kills a lot of old folks like us every year.

I walk every day in all kinds of weather, and I always enjoy it.
Of course, I am also a pathological masochist.
