Sometime in the late 50s or 60s, girls stopped wearing dresses all the time and switched to long pants. At first they were known as “tomboys,” and that wasn’t necessarily a compliment from adults..
But one of the coolest neighborhood girls I knew was such a tomboy: she played sports, joined in Monopoly marathons, and hunted for critters. Hello, Barbara, wherever you are now. I miss being young with you and the rest of the kids.
Auntie was different than the normal girls who would play with the boys. She taught the boys how to play “house” and “doctor.” She also taught them to smoke, and drink cheap wine.
I was a tomboy but much earlier than the 50’s. Probably 1939 on (I was 5). Yes, I wore dresses to school but as soon as I got home I changed into jeans or shorts. This was before Levi’s made jeans for girls. I had 2 special girl friends who were also tomboys. Best way to grow up !!!
I was one of those girls. I was a real tomboy and to this day I prefer male company to female company. Some women even in their 40’s are just still teenagers mentally . All the want to talk about is what some celebrity is doing who got booted off some reality TV show and who’s going out with who. Men are not like that . You can have a conversation with them that is fun lighthearted and really enjoyable and includes no gossip what so ever. I have a sister and a brother and when I was younger if my dad was asked by someone he’d just met what kids he had he’d say "A girl , (my Sister) a boy(my brother) and one of each (me).!
We grew up healthy and happy. Outside all the time, not over weight because we were busy playing hide and seek, dodge ball, or riding our bikes. Nothing wrong with that.

I grew up on a farm and remember when the hula-hoop first came out. I guess I could be considered tom-boy-“ish”. Those were the good ol days!!!!!!!

To my mother’s great disgust, I was a natural-born tomboy. It didn’t do me any harm at all.

And how about the boys who weren’t afraid to be one of the girls?
