The allusion is to “The Shadow,” the secret identity of Lamont Cranston, who had the power to “cloud men’s minds” so that he was invisible to them; however, bewildered and frustrated would-be onlookers could hear The Shadow (“Who knows the evil that lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!”) whose presence enabled him to elicit all sorts of incriminating information from mostly demented villains. Lamont’s power was something like that provided by Harry Potter’s "cloak of invisibility, but with audio.

Lamont could be very, very effective nowadays if he were real and if he had access to particularly malicious government officials. “Margo” is Margo Lane, Lamont Cranston’s girlfriend and aide-de-camp.

Only Margo knew Lamont’s secret identity and Lamont routinely rescued her from imminent danger while simultaneously thwarting “the vast insidious machinations of some baffled fiend,” as George Santayana put it.

He can “stand so perfectly still, that he becomes invisible.” Even while eating a packet of crisps.
