    It has to do with status: In the old days people of high status did not work and remained inside all the time, thus their skin was pale.

    The working stiffs on the other hand spend toiling on the fields and got tanned by the sun.

    So pale skin = money. Tanned skin = farm hand.

    These days it has reversed. The working stiffs remain indoors working in office buildings and are as pale as vampires while the rich go to the French Riviera to work on their tan.

    But pale = good, tanned = bad remains in force in Asia. For the same reasons (nothing to do with race and everything to do with money/status).
