I’ve only been in 2 accidents, neither my fault but my driving got a LOT better after being in a semi for 6 months (just as a rider) I give myself a lot more room to move, stop and go. Those truckers out there have MILLIONS of safe miles under their belts, I only have a few hundred thousand. I personally think that trainees should have to ride with a trucker for a full day in heavy traffic to better appreciate other drivers out there. Everyone should. So many get upset with trucks cause they are slow ect. Give them time, they are hauling up to 80,000 lbs of supplies. Supplies like the food you buy, clothes, and a lot more.
@ Monkeyhead, I agree with you. I also believe that everyone should start out with the smallest cars on the market, so that they can truly understand how vulnerable one feels when folks in those Big Cars and Huge SUVs are riding on the bumpers of the more reasonably-sized vehicles! It’s not just “giving space”, it’s also COURTESY that will help reduce the number/severity of collisions.
My son is a trucker. It is not an easy job. Most just think it is like driving they personal car. It also takes more room to stop them too. My son says it is not just his a$$ He has to worry about but everyone elses. Cause alot don’t think anything of cutting him off. A lot of jackknives are because the trucker was cut off . And sacrificed his load( and possiblly his job) for the passengers lives in the car that cut him off.
@MermaidStitcher…your son is right. A lot of people don’t understand that the truck they cut off, will lose the job if he rolls his truck…maybe his/her life. Truckers are a group of their own, may are extremely intelligent. I’ve heard of MDs going out there because the road called them…
@kkfin your right, a little bit of courtesy goes a LONG way. People seem to forget that driving is a PRIVILEGE!
