I think maybe they used a hybrid spelling because Baldo’s family likes both football and futbol. And possibly other sports.
Personally, I never got into them much. American football has a lot of stopping that I have no patience for, and European has penalties decide too many games (I don’t have a problem with games ending in a draw though, so apart from tourneys, it’s not an issue). It’s fun to watch them with people who do care though!
TrapperJohn – I was wondering what kind of enraged reaction I would get to my first entry, but I didn’t expect my entire country to be insulted. In my defense, I’m not much of an idiot. I did used to live in London, and watched my share of both cricket and footy, and found cricket to be more dynamic, which is saying something. As for why Americans pay attention to the score, it’s all about the betting, which we kinda enjoy. It’s hard to beat the point spread when the final score is “nil-nil.”

It’s there, but you spelled it wrong:. For the american sport there’s 2 ’L’s. For the rest of the world it’s: futbalistas

I think it would have been funnier to have Gracie reading a book and ignoring the game.

The only reason we keep score, is to see who won. We watch the game for the action.
