In addition to the people → Cleo transmogrification, she added the date of the 1st 500-mile race (took a little under 6¾ hours to complete) held there (the speedway went through some growing pains 1909-1910).
Sure hope this Sunday’s race is as exciting as Stel’s poster. Just look at the speed depicted. And a neck and neck finish, too. I just love IndyCar racing.

It only made sense to have those bassets racing in automobiles. If you had them running, it would just take forever.

Today’s poster is for the 1911 Basset Speedway race…
but look…. I found a human version!
Only it was apparently used in 1909.

Perhaps the poster served for more than one year……
or maybe Basset Speedway had to wait for the rights to its use.
It was (supposedly) already called the Indianapolis 500 …yet that title appears on neither poster….the basset nor the human one.
In any case, it doesn’t matter, cos it’s beautiful….
It all looks so genteel back then….
the basset ladies in their pretty hats.
the cars zooming by, close enough to touch.
Makes you forget that it was even less safe in those days…
even onlookers were involved in some crashes.
