The fact that it is Thanksgiving is incidental. The joke is the pitiable plight of ants and their susceptibility to natural disasters which seem trivial at a macroscopic level. In this case the decapitation of a loved one while defecating by a leaf.
The premise seems to be that falling leaves are dangerous objects to ants. This one fell edge on to great-grandpa and cut off his head. The one in the 11/18 strip that Starmann69 refers to fell flatly and crushed a bunch of ants. The resulting smashed sets of ant legs led to the millipede line.
M and H are only allowed one more leaf joke. We have had them crushed, We have had them decapitated. Maybe swept away on a leaf to a land far, far away where they meet dinosaurs and weird spacemen and fish that walk …and
Have you noticed that both BC and the Wizard of Id…both created by the late Johnny Hart and now continued by his grand son have “head scratchers” today? (Huh? What’s that strip supposed to mean?)
Its Fall – leaves fall. They dry and crackle and crunch under foot (until the rains come) They smell of the coming Winter. .And if enough of them fall in B.C. – maybe there will be enough ants gone so the grasshoppers can move in to their nice cozy homes.
