OK, I need an explanation. I know what downshifting is. Typically (with a manual transmission) you downshift when going down a steep decline to avoid accelerating too much. But what is going on here?
I think the commentators here have failed to recognize the highly advanced nature of the round wooden stick that serves as the axle of BC’s wheel. It clearly embodies truly amazing technology! All the more so considering that modern engineers can’t make round wooden sticks do anything of the kind!
My Prius does 0 to 45 as slowly or as quickly as i like with no noticed shifts. Fun to see everyone still leaving the intersection from half a block in front.

Pearl, you asked the same question I would ask. It looks like he was accelerating down the hill rather than slowing down. I am as confused as you are.

Don’t gears have to be invented first?

You can’t just invent downshifting: first you have to invent the differential, no shift!

Too much downshifting can be hard on the local avian population.

Why does this make me think of “The Little Nash Rambler” song?

Should’ve given some forethought to inventing brakes.

No way to shift up or down. A concept not applicable to what they have.
