To throw my 2 cents in: Constantine I aka the Holy Roman Emperor decreed Christmas to be December 25th in the year 336 CE. 11 years after he declared Christianity to be the official state religion of Rome.
As many older religions mark the Winter Solstice as the (re)birth of the Sun, Constantine I chose a date in the period of the year when most people were already celebrating to offer a mass in honor of the birth of the entity HIS recently adopted religion (he was approximately 46 years of age when he converted to Christianity in 325 CE) perceived* to be the son of God.
NOTE: I use the scientific notation of CE (common era) along with the term “perceived to be …” as my religious upbringing does not acknowledge the Christ / Messiah story.
