In high school, the teachers “suggest” you purchase a TI-84 calculator – which will run over $100 easily. If you can’t afford it, the student has to borrow the school one – but there is never enough for all the students who would need one. The only good thing about purchasing your own is that they can use that same one for the next few years, as well as for standardized tests (SATs and others). School supplies are not cheap anymore…
Yeah, the whole thing is ridiculous. When I was a kid we didn’t have to fuss with that kind of stuff. I did love the smell of a new box of crayons. =^.^= Bad enough they don’t do 10 months of school starting in September and ending June, but now stores like Wal-Mart have stations with all the schools’ lists for all the schools in the area in August. Sure ruins the rest of my summer as well as for the kids.
Been a teacher for years, now retired. I can tell you this—those school supply lists are designed by the stores to sell stuff. Better to wait until after the first day of school and go by the list the teacher hands your kid. A lot of the stuff on the school lists will not be needed at all by your kid.

Now you need the regular stuff plus protractors, calculators, tissue and paper towels. Ridiculous!
