My mother and father-in-law, always wanted to take one the grandchildren with them each summer as they drove across the country visiting historical sites, museums, and wildlife centers or zoos. We finally decided that when each child reached the age of 12 and desired to go with them, we would allow it. It improved their education of our country and did better in school in every subject at every level upon their return.
Out of 6 children, no one really offered to take one of mine. My aunt who raised me ran a daycare and would watch them while I worked. The oldest is my ’bonus son" and would sometimes leave with his mother. Eventually my girls who are also the 2 youngest would visit their aunt. #4 and 5 from the oldest had a different father and would visit their grandmother. I guess we were a modern day “Brady Bunch”. No one would take #3 because he had behavior problems.
Yah, send Nicholas to Vancouver for the summer! Hike the Grouse Grind and see the grizzly bears at the top. Visit the Vancouver Aquarium. Walk across the Capilano suspension bridge. Take the ferry over to Vancouver Island or up to the Sunshine Coast. Or just hit the beach and work on that tan. He’ll have an awesome summer out here!
Every summer our paternal grandparents would host one of the three of us at a time for a week. It was great to get away from the brothers for a week. They only lived about an hour away from our home, but to us it felt like a different planet. For each of us, the summer we turned 17 was spent at our other grandparents house in Oregon. That really was like living on a different planet.
