A chaotic room was an issue in our house during the teenage years. It was so bad, one day when I was at work, his friends did an intervention: they came in and cleaned it up.Unfortunately, all manner of things went missing (probably to the dump) His grandfather’s watch for example…it had a broken band…somebody must have thought it worthless. It wasn’t until he moved away and had to manage his own space that he arrived at a little order. For teenagers, just like some have with eating disorders, I think it is a control issue.
It’s actually easier to do it the other way around. Start three new piles: 1) Trash, 2) Clothes, and 3) Other Stuff. Everything in the room goes into one of these piles.
The trash pile is easy: toss it. The clothing and other stuff piles can be sorted through again and put away. Anything leftover either belongs in a different room (i.e. dishes to the kitchen) or likely belongs in the garbage can. Et voila! Sorted.

No, Betty, just have him get a shovel and a barrel and shovel it all out. He probably doesn’t know what’s buried there anyway.

It’s not a mess. It’s organized chaos.

I tell my girls to clean in sections, starting with the section by the door so that it can be opened all the way.

Did anybody else notice that whoever colored this was lazy? All of the stuff is either white, gray or light brown.
