FRANCIS: Okay, the "Louisiana Purchase" took place in 1803... NATE: I think it's cool that the state bird of Louisiana is the pelican! FRANCIS: ...Louisiana was admitted to statehood in 1812... NATE: Check out this drawing, Francis! See? It's a pelican! FRANCIS: The Battle of New Orleans was fought in 1815... NATE: I wonder if dad would let me have a pelican for a pet...probably not. FRANCIS: Will you forget the stupid pelican already?? NATE: I mean, the man won't even let me have a gerbil!

…and speaking of pelicans, in Big Nate Strikes Again, Nate mentioned that he once wrote a report about Louisiana and got a C+ because he wrote a lot of stuff about pelicans.

Francis’s face in the last panel makes it looked like he wanted to live in 1803 and buy Louisiana to himself and make it Nate-free.

I remember in one Big Nate novel, Nate recounts that Ms. Godfrey dinged him for putting too much pelican information in a report on Louisiana, and yes, I am aware that the novels are loosely based on the strip.
