All he had to do was NOT bring up the diary.

IF THE CONVERSATION CONTINUED (WARNING: DO NOT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY):

Nate: Uh… yeah! I can’t read my own diary!

Librarian: Stop playing jokes on me. Whose diary is it?

    Nate: Uhh…

Librarian: Shut up. According to my mind-reading powers, that diary belongs to YOUR SISTER, ELLEN!

Librarian (to Ellen through telepathy): HEY ELLEN! GUESS WHAT! NATE IS AT THE LIBRARY WITH YOUR DIARY, TRYING TO TRANSLATE YOUR LITTLE SECRETS FROM FRENCH TO ENGLISH!

Ellen speeds her way from the house to the library in 0.00000001 milliseconds. Boy, is she mad! Her face, oh so red! Her head, burning with steam! Her ears, crispier than fried chicken! Her eyes, pointing directly to her diary both of Nate’s hands, the latter of whom proceeds to cover it up. But it is too late. No turning back. Nate begins to sweat profusely. Ellen stomps her way to Nate, both of which being looked upon by a crowd of five thousand. She stops. She looks directly into Nate’s eyes, whose eyes are shaking. No word is spoken between them for the next two minutes. No soul mutters. No fly buzzes. No foot steps. No pin drops. Nothing. Not even the most quiet squeak of a mouse. The room is dead silent. That is. Until Ellen opens her mouth.

    Ellen: Tu es déjà mort.

    Nate: NANI?!

Ellen charges at Nate faster than the speed of light could handle, at a speed no human being is able to ever replicate, in fact, so fast a big explosion takes place, wiping out everything and everyone, everything, everyone, all except Nate and Ellen, fighting over one diary.

As I said, do not take it seriously :P
