This is like mozart deciding to become a professional wrestler! Nate: Can opener! Hee hee! I crack myself up!

Applying logic to the storyline only makes Nate more astounding. Keep in mind that he, against some of the best players in the state, has been able to discover one-move checkmates that his opponent missed. That takes insane vision (or a cartoonist who’s not concerned with appeasing certain nerds). He’s probably a 1500 elo, at least, with no formal training. And it’s easier to make a living playing chess now that it’s blown up online—though the competition is stiffer.
