Maybe they do a better job of making social studies interesting nowadays than they did when I was a kid. I don’t have too many good memories about middle school social studies, which is probably why poor Nate has such problems.

I had the opposite way- I took too many notes and then couldn’t tell what our teacher would want us to take the quiz on. There had to be some sort of middle ground somewhere…

I’m not sure they even call it “Social Studies” anymore. In my kids’ school it’s called “history” and in some schools it’s called “global studies.” In the strip, the subject matter in Nate’s social studies class is usually American history — revolutionary war, Civil War, and so on.

In my school each term we do something different so social studies is 3 subjects, history, geography and modern studies.

In my district, it’s called Social Studies until seventh grade. In seventh grade they start calling it History.
