Just stopped in to see what is going on. Just got back from league pool and I am really tired. I see most everyone has hit the sack also. I am going to do the same.

Nice breakfast spreads, Cleo and Bigg.

Hello Tribe! We had a storm earlier and it knocked out my internet. Today is “homecoming day.” I have to clean my bedroom which is currently a disaster zone. I’m going to bed late and getting up very early. I have to get to the grocery store before the “man” comes home. I’ll check in with you whenever I get a chance. Peace and Love to all!

    From Wikipedia:

Unobtainium is a humorous term that refers to an extremely rare, costly, or physically impossible material needed to fulfill a given design for a given application. The name is a portmanteau derived from unobtainable + -ium (the suffix for a number of elements). Variations include unobtanium and unattainium, with the same meaning. It is sometimes referred to as “element 404”, after the “HTTP 404 Not Found” error.

The properties of any particular “unobtainium” depend on the intended use. For example, a pulley made of unobtainium might be massless and frictionless. However, if used in a nuclear rocket, unobtainium would be light, strong at high temperatures, and resistant to radiation damage.

Another largely synonymous term includes wishalloy, although the sense is often subtly different in that a wishalloy usually doesn’t exist at all, whereas unobtainium may merely be unavailable. The term handwavium usually is used to indicate a material that probably cannot even in principle be real.

@doc, one problem with the pipeline: think of all the chances for leaks, and the delay in getting to them to fix them and do the cleanup. (Does the superfund have that much money?)

Now, if you could get something that lives in the coffee to do the leak checks and repair, that might work out better.

    Hello Tribe

First of all: Thank you all for the kind wishes that were said earlier about me getting the injection. You are all special.

Hearing did not improve at all yet. He did another painful injection and said if there is no improvement by next week, he would not recommend another injection. Then we wait 3 more months to see if there is any change. If not then I have to look at other options. Oh well!

The good thing about me having all of this done at the VA Hospital is that when I start thinking I have some bad problem all I have to do is look at the veterans that are being treated there. I walk around the place to take care of my appts. Many of them can’t. It makes you realize just how selfish we humans can be. After I got some depressed thoughts in my mind about my “problem”, I looked around and proceded to tell my sweety what a freakin’ fool I was. And a lot of other choice words which I don’t care to repeat.

Well, I will get off the soapbox now! Sorry if I am rambling.

I need to catch up on more comments. Can’t have a Jack and Coke, so I’ll need some of that Nuclear Coffee. BBL

Terry, Yes no matter how bad we think our lives may be at times, there is always someone worse off than we are. I think my kids came to appreciate that at a young age when we had school trips to the Shriners circus every year. So many of those poor children in wheelchairs, using oxygen tanks, chemo children, etc., it made my kids appreciate all that they had.

    HIGH SCHOOL – 1957 vs. 2008

Scenario 1: Jack goes quail hunting before school and pulls into the school parking lot with his shotgun in his truck’s gun rack.. 1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his new shotgun to show Jack. 2008 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers. Scenario 2: Johnny and Mark get into a fist fight after school. 1957 - Crowd gathers.. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies. 2008 - Police called and SWAT team arrives – they arrest both Johnny and Mark. They are both charged them with assault and both expelled even though Johnny started it. Scenario 3: Jeffrey will not be still in class, he disrupts other students. 1957 - Jeffrey sent to the Principal’s office and given a good paddling by the Principal. He then returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.. 2008 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. He becomes a zombie. He is then tested for ADD. The school gets extra money from the state because Jeffrey has a disability. Scenario 4: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt. 1957 - Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college and becomes a successful businessman. 2008 - Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy is removed to foster care and joins a gang. The state psychologist is told by Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has an affair with the psychologist. Scenario 5: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school. 1957 - Mark shares his aspirin with the Principal out on the smoking dock. 2008 - The police are called and Mark is expelled from school for drug violations. His car is then searched for drugs and weapons. Scenario 6: Pedro fails high school English. 1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English and goes to college. 2008 - Pedro’s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against the state school system and Pedro’s English teacher . English is then banned from core curriculum. Pedro is given his diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

    Scenario 7:

Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from the Fourth of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle and blows up a red ant bed..

1957 - Ants die. 2008 - ATF, Homeland Security and the FBI are all called. Johnny is charged with domestic terrorism. The FBI investigates his parents – and all siblings are removed from their home and all computers are confiscated. Johnny’s dad is placed on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

    Scenario 8:

Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him to comfort him.

1957 - In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing. 2008 - Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

This should hit every email inbox to show how stupid we have become!! AMEN TO THAT !!!!

@tabby, in many ways things make less sense now, as you said, even though these were extreme examples, naturally.

I think there are several reasons: a lack of community sense, so that we don’t support the discipline of others. A fear of others, and a hyperdeveloped fear of violence, probably because we have so much access to news. (In 1957, we wouldn’t have heard much about a school shooting for several days; now it becomes a media frenzy for several days.) A desire to control everything lest we get hurt. A greater appreciation of the damage that violence and trauma can do, and a desire to keep everyone safe from that psychological harm. I could go on, but that’s a start.

On the other hand, while life was more carefree, there were other problems. I know several youths who had brain damage because, well, that’s simply what happened in car or bike accidents sometimes. (No bike helmets; not all cars even had seatbelts, much less other safety features.)

Well my hopes are dashed!! :-( If anybody out there cares, I just saw that Brett Favre turned down the Vikings and is staying retired. Part of me was worried about him coming back, that he would get hurt badly, or end up on his last year ever with a losing season, but a bigger part of me was hoping he would come back and show the world how GREAT he is!! And kick some A # # !! He is the GREATEST!! At least in my book!!

    Hi everyone,

I have informed Mr Spock that although I appreciate his kindness, I have no desires for a blog or a web page right now so he agreed to take it down. My stories however will continue over at Pibgorn.

If I’m lucky tonight to get back on the computer, then I’ll post part two of my story.

I’m up really late at night when I write these stories of mine.

tabbylynn i’m glad that you enjoyed the first part of my tale When you wake up tomorrow go to pibgorn to see part 2 if I have it up.

(stomp) Now, if the irradiated animal is carrying radiation on its fur or within its body, you gotta worry…(squish)…but if it’s fifty foot squirrels you’re worried about, we’ve got a good six months before we need to worry. Shika-

Read it with a heavy British accent. I had an English teacher in middle school who was from Virginia, and she tried to read it to the class in very correct English. She didn’t get through the first stanza before I stood up and told her she was wrong. She told me to read it myself, out loud, and I did. It needs a heavy Cockney accent, and imagine that it’s someone in a pub telling you about his experience.

I’d love to hear it read like that Hymenoxis. I’ll bet your teacher wondered what was happening.

Are you British- or is that a silly question?

There are no silly questions….only silly people. I happen to enjoy the company of silly people.

No, I’m from Texas, but I’ve traveled a bit.

I performed the poem in a speech class in high school, and annoyed the teacher, who, again, thought the poem should be read in Victorian English. I sat her down and showed her the many contractions and grammatical errors in the poem, and she finally gave me an “A”.

If you do read the poem, imagine it’s a story being told by an old man in a smokey bar in England. It makes much more sense.

And while we are on movies, because of me, what about Stalag 17, The Great Escape, Bridge on the River Kwai?

I think that’s great. A Texan showing a teacher a thing or too about the English. I’d still love to hear you read it.

Amazing that you got an “A”. that’s perseverance and chutzpah. Not everyone would do what you did, but you sere smart to do it.

hymenoxis, yes the film was 1939 and it starred Errol Flynn. I take it you aren’t a fan of movies? I would read more, used to, but don’t have the time anymore, :-(

“Stalag 17”….loosely based on actual facts. To continue your education, read Joseph Heller’s “Catch 22.”

“The Great Escape”…again, loosely based on a POW escape in France, I think…I’d do Steve McQueen, and I’m not even gay.

“Bridge on the River Kwai”….again, loosely based on actual incidents. Myriad books on the subject. I suggest Google.

I find the opening three minutes of the film “Catch-22” to be among my favorite opening sequences. Yossarian flips off the camera…

hymenoxis, aren’t ALL movies based loosely on facts? But whatever, those films had great actors and a great storyline that kept you entertained! Oh yes, and based on total fiction but what a GREAT concept, Kelley’s Heroes!

I think there may be some truth to “Kelly’s Heroes”…although I doubt Donald Sutherland’s character actually existed. Seems anachronistic to me. Entertaining movie, though. Especially Don Rickles.

Hello Tribe. I may be scarce for awhile, although if temps cool down I will try to post, but will do no reading of previous posts. It is 86 degrees in our coolest room. Our computer is in the hottest room with two windows in direct sunlight almost all day long. Even with windows open and blinds pulled it is miserable. So, I will try to check in when temps allow. Miss you guys.

I just told everyone over at Pibgorn to stop talking about the ladywolf/Mr Spock thing I have resolved the matter earlier, but they kept on talking about me. I don’t want other people to get mad and accuse me of hijacking the site.

Ladywolf - no one thinks you’re “hijacking” anything. “Mr Spock” crossed a line and he corrected himself. It’s over and done. And you handled it with grace, dignity and tact.

Best advice I can give someone is this: not everything one thinks needs to come out the mouth (or the fingers) for everyone to see at the moment it’s thought. It’s a lesson I had to learn. I had a friend, many years ago, tell me that when he was quiet, everyone thought he was the smartest guy in the group. And… he was. Chatter is fun, but it loses something in writing. You’re a good storyteller because you think before presenting the writing (yourself) to the public. That’s a good trait to have in all aspects of your life. You seem like a good person. You’re dad’s a lucky guy to have you around. Keep doing good.
