When I was a pre-schooler, my uncle told me that the rubber that wore off of tires would slowly accumulate on the road and begin re-forming into tires. He pointed out chunks of tire tread and whatnot on the side of the road and said “see?”. He then told me that when they got big enough, they would crawl off behind gas stations until they were “ripe”, at which time the gas station would sell them.
I didn’t believe him, of course, but it still made for a pretty good story.

It’s a ‘99 70R15 - that was a goodyear for tires. Especially if it’s all seasoned just right…
