There is, or rather was, a “juvenile” series (for 8 – 12 yrs) of books about Freddy the Pig, and a bunch of farm animals (Walter R. Brooks). The premise was that animals talk just fine, but prefer not to become party to humans’ baroque screw-ups and so keep to themselves. As I remember it, the stories were very charming.
