Blink-182 Day Polarizes Nancy And Poncho With Pop Punk
by Caleb GoellnerBlink-182 is one of those bands that's so influential it hurts. Fans hurt because, in 2017, their favorite band still isn't that great live. Haters hurt because they can tell something sounds off about the band's 2016 record "California," but don't even realize co-founder Tom DeLonge quit the band to prioritize proving aliens exist. Either way, the world celebrates the band's storied career on the 182nd day of the calendar year, despite the fact that the "182" in their name is utterly meaningless.
That's just what happens when you're one of the biggest pop punk bands of the '90s and early '00s. Everybody takes your toilet jokes and sweet hooks and tries to pogo their way to their own career. But it's no small thing that the band stayed together for the kids from 1993 to 2005, selling a bajillion copies of their five studio albums before taking a break to start several other bands that didn't quite do either of those things at the same level.
Somehow, Nancy held onto the good times in 2007:
Pooch Cafe, however, did not in 2008:
Even when the core lineup of Delonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker realized fans were like "I Miss You," and they reconvened in 2009 to play a rock show or two and put out another record and an EP, it didn't seem like the band was feeling this in their metaphorical neighborhoods. DeLonge eventually quit or was kicked out or neither or both. Either way, Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiba took his place and their last album's best song is about San Diego.
Whether you're more of a Nancy or a Pancho, happy Blink-182 Day! Only 183 days until the next one!
