What began as a traditional cartoonist's gag (turning in a half-baked "I'm taking the day off" Labor Day strip) quickly became an Internet sensation with this September 3 edition of Nancy: 

The strip's first panel, with Nancy riding a hoverboard, carrying a smartphone and a portable music player, and uttering, "Sluggo is lit," quickly captured the fertile imagination of the Twitterverse.

#SluggoIsLit is now a trending hashtag and meme. Fans have photoshopped "SluggoIsLit" into various images that include Batman comics and Steven Crowder's "Change My Mind sign."There are even #SluggoIsLit T-shirts for sale. Nancy creator Olivia Jaimes has been forced to acknowledge the origins of #SluggoIsLit in a bombshell GoComics audio interview.

The "Sluggo is Lit" word balloon inspires many questions. Will Olivia Jaimes provide more context in a future strip, as she implied on Sept. 3? What does "Sluggo is Lit" mean, anyway? Is Nancy's pal friend showing off at a party? He's far too young to be mildly intoxicated, another popular meaning for the term that dates back to the 1940s.
