'Baldo' Documentary Wins Regional Emmy!
by Stephen RothA short documentary film about Baldo creators Carlos Castellanos and Hector Cantú won a regional Emmy award in Florida on Saturday.
Miami PBS affiliate WLRN was honored at the 42nd Annual Suncoast Emmy Awards in Orlando for the five-minute feature, "Inside the Mind of a Comic Creator."
In the documentary, Castellanos talks about his experiences growing up in the United States as a Cuban-American, and how the birth of his first child inspired him to team up with Cantú, a Mexican-American, to create Baldo.
Launched in 2000, Baldo was the first comic strip to focus on a Latino family. Its central character, Baldo, is an imaginative teen-aged boy whose life is "all about cars, girls, and trying to fit in. He likes to play sports, ride his bike, play video games and tinker with car parts with his best friend, Cruz," Castellanos explained in the film. Through the adventures of Baldo and his family, Castellanos and Cantú illustrate what it's like to live between two cultures, and two languages.
