The Most Buzz-Worthy Comic Strips of 2018
by by Thea VoutiritsasAhhh, the comments section. It's like a box of chocolates — you never know what you're gonna get. From torch-wielding vigilantes to unparalleled kindness and support, GoComics viewers can say just about anything (short of F@$&!) in the comments section. But don't think that freedom means you're not being watched. We've been keeping an eye out all year long to learn which caused the most controversy in 2018. Though GoComics fans proved themselves to be quite a chatty bunch in 2018, when it comes to buzz-worthy comics, there are only a handful of individual strips that can make the top 5 countdown:
5. Breaking Cat News
Let's get warmed up here with our fifth most-commented strip of 2018. Creator Georgia Dunn leaves us with a sweet treat in this Halloween edition of Breaking Cat News. Our darling cast of cats must rescue Puck from the inside of a locked trunk. Too bad our heroes don't have thumbs. Luckily, Elvis gets the ghost of cat philanthropist Freddie to unlock the truck. What a kind soul, indeed.
Our favorite comment on this delightful strip comes from user Fullmoondeb, who wrote:
"Hooray! More cookies for Freddie as a reward for her wonderful act in saving Puck."
4. Non Sequitur
Moving along to a slightly more controversial strip, the March 26 edition of Non Sequitur lands fourth on the list. In this strip, Danae wanders into the woods of magical niceness, a place devoid of an internet connection and ... testosterone? This one sparked a little debate, boys-versus-girls style. While there was no clear winner in this battle, there were a few outstanding opponents.
Our favorite comment comes from a user who fully understood the concept of "Girls rule, boys drool." Stacey Marshall wrote:
"Does that make it a booger-free zone, also?"
Yes, Stacey. Yes, it does.
3. Luann
Halfway through our countdown, we land at our third-most commented comic strip: the January 17th edition of Luann. Spoiler Alert! Luann fans reveled in this major plot twist. Who would have thought a bag of (imposter) designer lingerie could strain family ties and warrant interference from the feds? As if we didn't despise Ann Eiffel enough already. But hey, some Luann fans already saw this coming. As Mordock999 pointed out in the comments:
"Hey. You hear that sound? THAT is the sound of chest thumping from all those that predicted Ann was Mr. Ferrell's girlfriend as early as last fall. SALUTE!!!"
2. Gil Thorp
Cinching the number two spot is a relatively benign Dec. 22 strip from Gil Thorp. What makes this strip so exciting, you ask? Well, we garnered a few art critiques on this one, especially comparisons to Jerry Lewis, but honestly? This strip didn't update for little while, and GoComics readers were itching for their special Christmas message from the strip! Our bad, guys. But it's nice to know you care.
1. Pearls Before Swine
Coming in at number one on our most-commented list is Pearls Before Swine. Artist Stephen Pastis takes a break from his usual humor in this December 9 edition to commemorate his beloved dog, Edee. This poignant strip brought tears to the eyes of readers everywhere. Commenters lent their love and support to the artist, some even sharing fond memories of their own. Our favorite comment on this one comes from DarthDurinsBANEling, who finds the sweet spot between hilarious and heartbreaking:
"Stephen, your comic is really hard to read. I can tell because my eyes are starting to sweat."
It ain't easy to inspire conversation (or get anyone on the internet to do anything constructive, really). So let's give it up for the top 5 most-commented comics of 2018! And to our readers: keep on keepin' on. Don't forget to share the love in the comments section this year. Who knows? Maybe you'll see your own comment up here next time!

I’d be more interested in the comic strips that had the most comments over the full year. Which strips consistently inspired the most reader interactions?
