Hector Cantú Talks 'Baldo' to KERA-FM
by Charlie UpchurchBaldo creator Hectur Cantú was the focus of KERA-FM's Art&Seek Spotlight on Thursday, where he shared the origins of his popular comic strip about the Bermudez family.
Cantú, who creates the strip with illustrator Carlos Castellano, spoke about growing up with comics and wanting to see his own stories and experiences represented in the funny pages.
When asked about the responsiblity that comes with representing audiences of color, Cantú said: "I just thought it would be a good time to talk about how these characters come to life. How you sit down. How you create characters. How you write about characters. And how they fit into today’s culture. And it just boils down to writing about what you know about."
Out of this impulse, Baldo, Gracie, Papi and Tia Carmen were born, and have told the story of a loving and charming family for years.
