Sisphos, It was a good advertising idea which is why Hardee’s, MacDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s have been using it since this strip first appeared in the early 80’s.
I agree with ejcapulet. Chewing your food in a loud, sloppy manner is not only rude; it’s sickening. If that was an advertisement for an actual product I’d never buy it. I think this must be where the term “choke and puke” originated for burger joints.
Wow. back in college, when it first came out, I used this particular strip as a visual aid in a marketing paper. I remember cutting it out of the paper to mount it. Which was the only way to save comics then.
lessee now, if you were in college in the eighties,
that would make you ….oh…..fifty or so—-
you are not a college person anymore, but you are not old…….
don’t worry, be happy
There was once a commercial for Dole bananas that showed a beautiful woman putting one to her mouth suggestively; the slogan was, “If you feel it, peel it.”
No, I’m not kidding. Take a look:

I also dislike commercials that feature crunching noises. I’d really like to know how many other people are put off by these ads with people masticating their food. Just tell me your product is crunchy, I get it.
I refuse to go to Carl’s Jr. primarily because their commercials are absolutely disgusting. I HATE watching somebody eating a burger sloppily, dripping ketchup and other sauces all over their clothing and listening to them chewing loudly. And this is supposed to be a GOOD thing? Yuck. Give the man a napkin! Several napkins! And lessons in how to eat! I believe the slogan is “Don’t bother me, I’m eating.” No, you’re not, you’re trying to ingest it through your skin….Ugh!
…Hey hey hey…Boo Boo Bear was here just a moment ago…what’s this…he’s gone…nothing left here but this old picnic basket…oh well…more for me…none for him…hey hey hey…I guess old Boo Boo wasn’t as smart as the average picnic basket…hey hey hey…

In my part of the country we have a chain I disaffectionately call Whatabooger. (Yes, I know, I created a nonexistent adverb.)
