I bought a tree years ago from a u-cut lot. When I got it home it was so wide that two of us had to pull together to get the tree into the house. It crushed our tree stand and we had to buy a stand that was made of concrete and 1/4” thick steel. Even with that we had to put a hook in the wall and a rope wrapped halfway up the tree to keep it upright. We discovered a mouse nest in the tree the next morning. After Christmas we had to cut the branches off of it to get it out of the house. Trees never look as big as they are until you get them home.
My grandmother told me that when my mom and uncle were young children they’d get mad at my grandfather for choosing such a “little tree” from their property to put up for Christmas. When he’d get the tree back to the house, it was often too tall to be set upright in the parlor (with its 10-ft ceiling), so the top or the bottom would have to be cut off. By the time my sister and I came along, the trees he picked were a better fit.

Did you think that we would be an intelligent family? Did you ever see us try to put up Christmas lights for God’s sake.

I hope they decided to cut off the bottom of the trees.

And you are right Frank. Even though my mom has been dead for years, I can almost smell her cooking. Great strip!
