Riley: Is it true that hundreds of years ago black people were brought to America as slaves from Africa and most died on the way here?
Granddad: Yes.
Riley: Well... good thing you made it.
Granddad: I wasn't there!!
Not necessarily.There were a few free black colonists, and a larger number who came as indentured servants rather than slaves in the early 17th Century.

Yeah, he only lived through the Jim Crow era… which is making a comeback (though now it’s aimed at poor people instead of black people).
