Granddad: Well, the guy at the jewelry store had his right ear pierced, and he didn't seem like a "certain kind of man." Riley: Granddad! The jeweler is on the phone! He wants to know if you're up for dinner. Granddad: Tell him I'll call him back. Huey: I wouldn't.

From what I understand, it depends on which ear has the piercing. It was far simpler for the pirates and biker gang members. No one would think of them as a “certain kind of man”.

The pirates lived with no female company on a ship. Sounds like the start of many close relationships. I don’t know about bikers, I assume that they have female members and can always drop in a bar to pick up women. The pirates would not see land or women for years.
