Jazmine: Most people don't understand what it's like being different. Like... I once saw a yellow flower right in the middle of a bunch of red roses... Everything around it was either green or red, and here was this yellow flower. It looked lonely. That's what it's like being biracial. I'm different from everyone else. My mom and dad say that makes me special, but I just think it's lonely... Huey: Jazmine? Jazmine: Yes? Huey: You're black. Get over it. Jazmine: Ohhh. Be quiet - Nobody was talking to you anyway. Hmmmph.

Stop denying your heritage

Her race is human not black. The concept of race based on skin color is a false one not backed up by any science.

It’s just as accurate to say she’s white as to say she’s black. Although I like Huey his persistence borders on cruelty. It’s not okay to hurt someone’s feelings.

Well, I have white relatives, but I can’t exactly relate to the conflicts of being biracial.

My dog was half poodle and half shih-tzu. So which is she? Besides sadly missed.

Huey is sort of making her point here, isn’t he?

Childhood can be so tough: “others” feel they have the right to you who you are, or how you should be, or what you should be, or feel free to push you away. Thank goodness for those who just embrace you as you are.

Huey’s a supporter of the one drop rule I assume.

Hmm. Many people care what breed their dogs are, but I doubt if any dog cares what breed it’s people are.

Huey is such a racial toad. If Jasmine wants to be considered white, malato, black or whatever, it’s none of his business.

Mr McGruder, thinking. Huey is embracing his biological heritage and that’s a good thing. His first attempt to convince Jazmine to embrace her hair was good – he offered his comb. Her hair is a biological result of her Black ancestry. But to deny either heritage is hurtful. Huey’s a kid. He’s still figuring out himself, and how to navigate a very tough world. His reality is not Jazmine’s though, and never will be. First her biological – she is a female; next her biological heritage: she is mixture of two cultures, and all too often “others” in society reject such children. That is ridiculous, because None of us are “pure” anything. Jazmine has a minefield to navigate… her feminine imperative, embracing the amazing mixture of cultures she has inherited, and reaching for the confidence she’ll need to embrace all of herself. Nurture meet Nature. I hope I have not offended anyone with my ramblings.

Trevor Noah’s book “Born a Crime” is a fascinating look at Apartheid from a mixed race perspective.
