For chickens, homeless and wandering around aimlessly would be much, much better than the lives of 99% of chickens – crammed together so tightly that they can’t move, too sick and weak to move much even if they did have freedom, no access to outside air or sun, fed food that fattens them up but doesn’t supply adequate nutrients for strong bones or organs, etc., etc.
A couple of years ago my Mom and I took a drive up Rt 60 in Virginia. Between Williamsburg and Richmond, we stopped at some roadside tables for a picnic lunch. Underneath one of the tables was a chicken, sitting on her nest. We chose another and didn’t disturb her except to take a couple of pictures.
