I think the difference is that in team sports the fans get very emotionally invested in “their team” where in golf fans may support a specific golfer but for the most part they are invested in the art of the game.When you see a guy you hate get a hole in one or sink a 40’ putt, you applaud because you’ve just witnessed something awesome.Golf may be the only event where your competition is rooting for you to play well, and they genuinely feel bad if you play poorly.
