Bless the boy’s little pea pickin’ heart! So artistic….but Puck knows Mom might not want a rainbow on the wall. And Lupin is still a rainbow of glitter!
Ohhhhhhhhh, I see where this is going and how it ties in. Oh no… …I guess it’s unlikely that a child of this age would have easy access to non-washable paints? Watercolor and/or kid-grade poster paint probably comes off eventually, right? I don’t know, I didn’t draw on walls as a kid.
Although I still take spur-of-the-moment notes on the shower wall in bath crayon. I get good ideas in the shower, what can I say? Especially when I’m working on a story and plot/worldbuilding are buzzing around in my brain all the time.
My mom worked in a paper mill. She would bring home paper that wasn’t good enough to sell. She would tape big pieces on the wall and we would draw pictures and scenes and color them in.
Oh, Pucky! That last frame…I just can’t. And poor Lupin. It will be March and he’ll still be glittering…My girls never drew on the walls, but Thing 2 slept on the bottom bunk (my dad stayed with us after my mother died so the girls shared a room) would peel at the wallpaper. That was…less than pleasant.
Lupin can add glittery paw prints to the Boy’s painting on the wall. And if someone serves him some catfeinated cat coffee, the ceiling will be a wall, too!
The first rainbow was the floating bridge of heaven, on which Izanami and Izanagi stood to create Japan. I cannot say whether this was the same bridge as the one that led to Asgard.
O.T. Shhh. Don’t let any cat read what I’m about to reveal. We all know that cats have never gotten over the fact that they were worshiped in Ancient Egypt. Well, I’m reading the current issue of Archaeology and found out the Paracas culture of Ancient Peru (think Nazca lines) worshiped the killer whale as a deity with dominion over the water; the condor for the air and (drum roll please) THE CAT for dominion over the earth!!! That’s right. Cats are in charge of everything on the earth!!! Of course, we all knew that but here’s proof (a Nazca drawing of a cat was recently discovered – it’s 121 feet long.) As I said, don’t let the cats know.
There used to be a cartoon show that featured “Rinky Dink”. You would buy your kid a little kit that included a washable marker and plastic film to cover the TV. If Rinky Dink needed a bridge to cross a stream, the child was encouraged to draw him a bridge. Of course, the plastic film would get lost, the washable marker would get lost and it was only a matter of time before some child found an indelible marker to “help” Rinky Dink. THAT was the end of Rinky Dink.
Arthur C. Clarke’s Birthday: Cue “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” Next year is 2021. Why the hell don’t we have colonies on the Moon? Cue something inane and modern.
Boston Tea Party Day: The American attempt to make the ocean a teapot. They failed, became a nation of coffee drinkers, and the rest is history—which almost none of them learn. The mistakes Britain made back then are essentially similar to the mistakes the US is making now, both domestically and internationally. However, I suspect that among this group, I’m carrying tea to China.
Stupid Toy Day: “It went zip when it moved/ Pop when it stopped/ whirred when it stood still/ I never knew just what it was/ and I guess I never will.†” Then it was declared a child safety hazard and they took it away. I don’t know how to define “stupid,” but I know it when I see it: toys that are so “safe” and “appropriate” that a child cannot use his or her imagination, and certainly won’t learn responsible behavior. Stupid toys are designed by adults who have lost their inner child. †"The Marvelous Toy" by Tom Paxton.
National Chocolate Covered Anything Day: I think they mean “anything edible,” but I wouldn’t bet on it. I recall a science fiction story from my misspent youth (playing with unsafe and inappropriate toys, learning to be responsible with them) that involved chocolate covered manhole covers—really chewy centers … It has been said that chocolate makes anything better, and I have said so myself. However, I suspect there are exceptions: Chocolate covered Brussels sprouts, for example, or okra dipped in chocolate. However, De gustibus non disputandem est. Now where did I leave the chocolate-dipped habeñeros …?
Many years ago, wood paneling became the wall covering of choice so my mom let my older brothers “decorate” the painted walls as they wished before the paneling was put up. I now own the family homeplace, and I have this image of its next owner deciding the paneling needs to go, ripping it off, and discovering that the surface they were going to paint in a trendy color is covered with drawings that can’t be painted over. The giant moose head above the mantle will be a particularly fun surprise.

Is anyone of you familiar with that wonderful book “Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics”? A spoof on your average art critic and the effusions on the works of contemporary artists.
I remember a German painter “Tiger” who had the nihilistic streak of destroying his works once completed. When some of the artists ran out of canvas – yes they were given finger, ehem paw paint in small bowls a selection of colours plus a sheet of paper stuck on the wall more often than not – they continued their artwork on the e. g. living room wall. A must read for all cat lovers. Perhaps a constant source of inspiration for resident artist Sophie.
Who knows. I would not put it beyond Lupin to give the boy a helping hand and add some feline aesthetics.
Wise idea, Puck. After what happened to poor Lupin with the evil glitter, you’d hope the Boy and Girl would learn something. The girl maybe. The Boy….. Can someone put up a roll of wrapping paper on the wall please?

On a cold winter’s evening
Near a wall devoid of color
Puck met up with an artist
They both felt Mom/Ma’am’s sadness deep
So they took turns a-starin’
At a wall so clean but empty
Inspiration overtook him
And he began to paint
You’ve gotta know when to scold him
Puck, you shoulda told him
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never paint wall rainbows
When you’re waitin’ for the big guy
There’ll be time enough for paintin’
After Santa’s come

As performed by Judy Garland: Over the Rainbow:
Today, I’ll paint a rainbow
On the wall
Create a picture so joyous,
To cheer up one and all.
…….
Today, I’ll paint a rainbow,
Red, yellow, and blue,
Colors all in my paint box,
To show that dreams come true.
…….
I’ll get my watercolors out
And show that without a doubt
It gets better,
I’ll send a message
All will know
I do not need to write in
A letter!
…….
Today, I’ll paint a rainbow,
On the wall,
I love to see a rainbow,
So do one and all!
…….
If brightly colored rainbows
Give a sense of joy
Then so will I!
