With this whole arc, I’m surprised that Calvin and Hobbes never did an arc where Calvin got hit by a car. Then again, that probably would have been too traumatizing.
I never grew up with a pet dog, but I can imagine for lots of folks reading this that this arc hits hard. Losing your pet, or as some people say, “fur baby,” is a sad experience. My eldest sister was graced to have a toy poodle named “Whitey” as a kid, and was very saddened when he had to be put down after being bitten in the eye by a squirrel.
For dog’s best friend, things like this are hard to comprehend. Losing your faithful companion so quickly and traumatically doesn’t feel real. Not being there, only to hear about it later is like being told some cruel joke.
There is beauty in tragedy, however. To have loved your dog, cat, any pet, or even a person so much to feel pain when they’re gone is a testimony to the positive impact they’ve had on your life! To be sad about it is to be human, and it takes time to heal. But to let that love inspire you to impact others with that same love that you felt for your loved one is a heroic act.
As for Buckles, things are looking bleak. Having read the strip for about seven years gives me an idea of how this arc will come to a close. This is Buckles we’re talking about, after all!

Any of us that have pets, whatever they might be or were, this really is sad moment and likely stirs up traumatic memories.

He will pull through, he has to, probably will all bandaged up! And be even cuter!

I know this is probably crass, but maybe he will learn not to resist the leash.

It would have been worse if Hobbes was hit by a car
