On top of spaghetti all covered in cheese I lost my poor meatball when somebody sneezed It rolled of the table and onto the floor and then my poor meatball rolled out of the door It rolled in the garden and under a bush and now my poor meatball is nothing but mush

This is one of me favorites, one of the biggest laughs I ever got from Calvin and Hobbes, which is saying something! It is also my six-year-old’s favorite, which shows just what a broad appeal C&H has. The contrast between panels five and six are pure distilled comedy.

Full version:
On top of spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
I lost my poor meatball,
When somebody sneezed.
.
It rolled off the table,
And on to the floor,
And then my poor meatball,
Rolled out of the door.
.
It rolled in the garden,
And under a bush,
And then my poor meatball,
Was nothing but mush.
.
The mush was as tasty
As tasty could be,
And then the next summer,
It grew into a tree.
.
The tree was all covered,
All covered with moss,
And on it grew meatballs,
And tomato sauce.
.
So if you eat spaghetti,
All covered with cheese,
Hold on to your meatball,
And . . . DON’T . . . ever . . . sneeze!

This one never fails to make me laugh. Just that image of an otherwise realistically rendered sparrow suddenly screeching “On Top of Spaghetti” is pretty hilarious.

I sang this song when I was only a bit older than Calvin! It was popular at summer day camp.

I love the way the sparrow is drawn when he sings.
