Actually, this strip was from 1986 or ‘87; 50 years in the past would have been the 1930s, so the snowman’s costume is authentic. Don’t forget, Watterson published this cartoon strip from 1985 to 1995.
Ummm the copyright date of this strip is 1992. Says so on the right of the second panel so “50 years ago” is NOT 1962. It would have been 1942 as previous comments have pointed out.I’m afraid it’s not pre-WW2 since 1942 was like right smack-dab in the middle of it, but nor is Calvin referring to the hippee era.Come on y’all. This is an old comic. There hasn’t been a new strip since 1995.
On a lighter note: Man this brings back memories. This was the year before a blizzard came to the South. March 1993. I was 12 then and making snowmen just like Calvin. Never saw so much snow in my life nor so much snow since then. A whole 12 inches at least. ^^
Hippies didn’t start until about the mid-60’s and weren’t really popularized until January 1967 which was followed by the Summer of Love on the west coast and the 1969 Woodstock Festival on the east coast.
I am trying to figure out where Calvin keeps coming up with all that refined english. I don’t remember having that kind of vocabulary when I was his age. Smile
Given the foregoing Arithmetic and History lessons, since this is after the fashion of Grant Woods “American Gothic” you need to to be 82 years past (1930) from today’s date or 62 years from the original date of publication.
I always read all comments before posting one of my own just to make sure I don’t repeat something someone else has already said because I absolutely hate redundancy. Why others don’t do the same thing . . . I do not know.

Remember folks – this is not a current work – it originates in the 80s. So 50 years before the 80s is…. ?
leaman100 almost 13 years ago
50 years ago today would be 1962. 50 years ago when this comic was first drawn would be about 1942 or so.

This was drawn between ’85 and ’95. WWII and before. Not hippies.

Uh-Oh better put new batteries in their calculator. 50 years ago would have been 1962, 17 years AFTER WWII.
graycie5198 almost 13 years ago
50 years ago was 1962 and this early Boomer was in high school listening to rock’n’roll. No WWII. No hippies. Right in between.

Oops, must read ALL the comments to avoid silly mistakes . . . 1930s it is.

RH3 almost 13 years ago
The strip was pbulished between 1985 and 1995, the 50 years previous era was 1935 – 1945.
But why assume Calvin has a sound grasp of history? For him “50 years ago” could just mean “long before I was born”.
