I remember feeling this way at times during elementary school. It depended on my teacher’s attitude and how boring or interesting the topic was. Strangely enough, my mother could sympathize, as she hated school as a child.
Is it just me, or is gocomics.com being a butthead to everyone and refusing to bring up today’s strip of each comic directly and making us see yesterday first and using the > to get to today. Clicks count must be down. I wonder why.
At an early age I learned the secret of nurturing enthusiasm. When presented with an unwelcome task I would ask myself, “how would I go about this if I liked to do it and needed to get it done quickly?”. Often, the “fake enthusiasm” would get me into the interesting part of the lesson and I would do independent study on it.
My mother encouraged this kind of thinking with a rule that depended on my love of reading. For every five fiction books (pirates, space aliens, Hardy boys) I had to read three non-fiction books. THAT is how I got most of my education. Schools just provide a basic framework for learning.
Today, I don’t see how parents could regulate reading in that manner. Sad, in a way.
It’s like a follow-up to that strip from three months ago with Calvin’s day about “up,” except by the end of the day he’s certainly not looking up! In that last panel, that’s pretty much what it’s like coming home from work and not making a single green traffic light, having to stop at all red lights…
I don’t want to get up. I don’t want to get dressed. I don’t want to get in the carpool. I don’t want to go to work. I don’t want to listen to the boss. I don’t want to work. I don’t want any performance reviews. I don’t want to take work home with me.

Broadway musicals start with an “I want” song, but this is an “I don’t want” song, by REO Speedwagon.
