I won the “best penmanship” award in the fourth grade, and spent hours working to win it again in the fifth, only to be told I was being selfish and greedy, and even though it was clearly the best of all those on the bulletin board (parents put gold stars on their choice on Open House night and I had over half of all the stars), I wasn’t going to be given the award again. So I gave up on it, and was scolded for being lazy.
God. was I jealous of students with good penmanship. My teachers didn’t buy it that a came from two generations of doctors.Even in college my profs would encourage me to bring my Underwood to exams. Thank you Bill Gates.
I always had horrible penmanship. I gave up using cursive letters except for my signature.
Now when I write I go back to printing letters. My dad did this too. He needed to write a lot. He was a banker and a high-school music/history teacher.
I got so I could print pretty fast. It was ugly but it was legible.
As far as typing goes I didn’t even get half way proficient. until I started using computers. And I still commit typos all over the place. I also have spell check, either from Office or Win 7.
I’m left-handed so my writing always looked like chickenscratch to my teachers until I showed them how to read it in a mirror…no wait, that was Da Vinci who did that. Never mind.

The poor kid is being henpecked. Penmanship is no longer being taught in school. Don’t chicken out; get him a computer.
