The voice on the tape traditionally would say, "Your mission, should you decide to accept it, . . . " so all the excuse-making is really not necessary.

Of course a woman could have accepted, no sweat. And her evening activity would have been something more productive (or at least, vaguely interesting) than ‘the big game’.
