In my youth bowling league days, there was a guy on my team who launched the ball such that it didn’t connect with the wood for about 10 or 15 feet. Surprisingly, it actually worked well for him (although I couldn’t say the same for the lane surface).

Around here they won’t let adults use the bumpers, if there aren’t any small children using the lane. Drats! I could use them.
