Counselor: We've lost a couple of campers in the canoe race. Man: Omigosh! Their canoe went down?! Counselor: No. They were seen trying to take a shortcut down a side creek. Man: But the race was straight across the lake! It was that Buzz Beamer kid again, right? Counselor: He likes to take the water less-traveled, Tank.

Wait. Now we’re organizing pickup games?
Pickup games were one of the great tools of my socialization. There’s negotiating over rules (“right field is out”; “but Bill’s left handed”; “tough” (or “we’ll shift for Bill”).There’s learning that it’s OK to get picked last (particularly in basketball — they are much happier to play 3 on 3 than 3 on 2).There’s resolving disputes yourselves, particularly on whether the ball was “in” or “out” of some imaginary line between two jackets. There’s the fun of playing out of position — scoring a goal when you usually played left defense, or getting a chance to play goalie.
I’m personally unfamiliar with street soccer, so maybe I’m being too harsh. Can others enlighten me?
